Memorable Wall Art

I saw this project on this awesome craft blog and I instantly fell in love with the idea. I purchased 1/4 yard of each of these 7 fabrics and 1 yard of the burlap. We had some extra shelving material so my husband cut two 15 x 18 inch rectangles. Then we used the staple gun and wrapped the burlap around and secured it with the staples. My son and I used Mod Podge to adhere the burlap to the board and let that dry overnight. I cut different sizes of leaves out of the different fabrics. I also traced the kid's hands and forearms onto the brown fabric. Then I placed the hands/trunks on the boards to figure out the basic shape that I wanted for the tree. Then we used Mod Podge to adhere each of the leaves onto the burlap and then added the trunks, which took about an hour. Then we covered the whole tree with another layer of Mod Podge to seal it all together. I also added a leaf on the bottom with their name, age, and the date.

**Here are some things that I learned by doing this project; If you have a lump of Mod Podge left on the board it will dry that way so be sure the smooth it all out. It would have been better to just adhere the burlap to the front of the board and paint the sides. (I may end up removing it from the back and painting the sides after all. I'm going to look at it awhile longer and then decide.) For the two boards I only needed 1/2 a yard of burlap. Hobby Lobby sells several different colors of burlap. We chose a sage green burlap. I could have purchased 1/8 of a yard of the different fabrics for the leaves. I have a lot of it left over (which isn't actually a bad thing.) I found that if I cut several strips of fabric out first and then cut the leaves from those strips then my leaves stayed more uniform in size. The strips ranged from 1 1/2 in. wide to 2 in. wide.**
